Economy


           Economy depends mainly on subsistence agriculture, including coconut, grown for export. The economy also depends on Fisheries, which grew at an accelerated rate in recent years.





 But natural disasters greatly affect the country's economy. Ex: The devasting tsunami in 2009.




Society of Samoa

         Samoa is a traditional society, where family is all important. Society Samoa has tow key elements to it: 

The Matai


        Matai are the heads of the extended family unit and their role is very complex covering family, civic and political duties in the village. 


The Aiga

             The AIGA or extended family consists of parents, brothers and sisters, children, grandparents, cousins, etc.. When family members married with people from other villages, the in-laws also become part of the family unit and need to comply with their duties to this family.



Government


          Government of Samoa is the democratic parliamentary system.The executive and legislative powers are united.The prime minister is chosen by most people in the government and is appointed by the head of state. Chiefs (matai) are the only ones who may be candidates for election. There are over 25,000 matai in the country, about 5% of whom are women.





Education


          The education in Samoa is divided in 3 parts: Primary Education, Secundary Education and Terciary education.
          English is compulsory education in Samoa.The primary schools are located in villages. The secondary, lies in the areas of greater settlement. There are several institutions of higher education in Samoa. Including the College of Tropical Agriculture and a College of Trades Training. Its faculties include Arts, Business & Entrepreneurship, Education, Nursing and Health Sciences, Science, Business and General Studies, Engineering and Maritime Training.
